Background
Charles Marion Russell was
born to an upper class home
in Missouri in March of
1864. Not interested
in joining his father's
business, Charles moved west
to Montana territory.
He worked on a sheep ranch,
then spent 2 years as an
assistant to a hunter and
trapper, before settling in
as a cowboy. In his
free time, Charles sketched,
painted and formed clay
figures of small animals.
His love of animals and the
wild western life were
depicted in his paintings
and sculpture.
Charles' sculptures captured
the untamed west, as did his
paintings.
"Stagecoach" depicts the
rough life and drama of the
west in great detail.
